Mount Kenya can be climbed year-round, but some months are far better than others. Here is the month-by-month breakdown.
January–February (Best)
Dry, warm and clear. The best months for trekking and photography. Trails are firm, summit night is cold but usually cloudless. Book early — this is peak season.
March–May (Avoid — long rains)
The long rains. Trails turn to mud, visibility drops and the forest section becomes a leech-filled slog. We do not recommend trekking in this window.
June (Good)
Drying out after the rains. Some lingering clouds but increasingly clear. Quieter than July–October.
July–October (Best)
Cool and dry after the long rains. Excellent visibility, firm trails and reliable summit mornings. The second peak season — book in advance.
November (Avoid — short rains)
The short rains. Unpredictable but generally wet. Possible to climb early or late in the month but not recommended.
December (Good)
Drying out again. A quiet window before the January peak. Good value and fewer climbers.
The bottom line
Aim for **January–February** or **July–October**. If you want fewer crowds and do not mind cooler conditions, **June** and **December** are excellent shoulder-season choices.
