The short answer
Kilimanjaro (5,895m) is higher, more famous and has a higher summit success rate on its longer routes — but it is crowded and more expensive. Mount Kenya (4,985m trekking peak) is more scenic, much quieter, cheaper, and a true wilderness experience. Many climbers do Mount Kenya first to acclimatize, then Kilimanjaro.

Difficulty
Kilimanjaro is 910m higher, so altitude is a bigger factor. But its trekking routes are well-graded paths with no scrambling (except the short Barranco Wall on Machame/Lemosho). Mount Kenya's trekking routes are similarly non-technical, though Chogoria is more rugged underfoot. Mount Kenya also offers technical rock climbing to Nelion and Batian — Kilimanjaro has no equivalent.
Scenery
Mount Kenya is widely regarded as the more beautiful mountain — glacial tarns, giant lobelia, alpine peaks and a jagged skyline. Kilimanjaro is a single massive volcano crossing five climate zones, dramatic in scale but less varied in detail.
Crowds
Kilimanjaro sees roughly 50,000 climbers a year; on Machame you will rarely be alone. Mount Kenya sees a fraction of that — on the Chogoria route you may see no other group for days.
Cost
Mount Kenya is significantly cheaper. A 4-day Sirimon trek starts at $890 versus $1,750 for a 6-day Marangu trek. Kilimanjaro's park fees alone are around $820 per person.
The smart move: climb both
Many of our climbers summit Mount Kenya first (cheaper, quieter, excellent acclimatization), then fly to Kilimanjaro a week later with altitude already in their legs. The combination gives you the best of both mountains and a far higher Kilimanjaro success rate. Ask us about a combined itinerary.
