The short answer
The best months to climb Mount Kenya are January–February and July–October. These are the dry seasons — firm trails, clear summit mornings and the best photography conditions. Avoid the long rains (March–May) and short rains (November).
Month-by-month guide
| Month | Conditions | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| January | Dry, warm, clear | Best — book early |
| February | Dry, warm, clear | Best — peak season |
| March | Long rains begin | Avoid |
| April | Long rains | Avoid |
| May | Long rains | Avoid |
| June | Drying out, some clouds | Good — quieter |
| July | Cool, dry, clear | Best — peak season |
| August | Cool, dry, clear | Best — peak season |
| September | Cool, dry, clear | Best — best for Batian |
| October | Dry, warming | Good |
| November | Short rains | Avoid |
| December | Drying out, quieter | Good — shoulder value |
What about technical Batian climbs?
For the technical summits of Nelion and Batian, the best window is July–September, when the rock is dry and the routes are in their safest condition. Ice on the Lewis Glacier can make the traverse treacherous outside this window.
Does it matter which route I choose?
The drier western routes (Sirimon, Naromoru) handle a little moisture better than the eastern Chogoria route, which needs a 4x4 to the gate and becomes very muddy in the rains. If you must trek in a shoulder month, Sirimon is the safest choice.
Bottom line
Aim for January–February or July–October. For fewer crowds and cooler conditions, June and December are excellent shoulder-season choices with good value.
