Packing for Mount Kenya is about layers. You will hike in t-shirt weather at midday and face -10°C on summit night. Here is exactly what to bring for a 4–5 day trek to Point Lenana.

Clothing (layering system)

  • 1 base layer top and bottom (merino or synthetic)
  • 1 mid-weight fleece
  • 1 insulated jacket (down or synthetic)
  • 1 hard-shell waterproof jacket
  • 1 waterproof over-trouser
  • 2 trekking t-shirts
  • 1 trekking trousers
  • 1 warm hat and 1 sun hat
  • 1 pair gloves (warm) and 1 pair liner gloves
  • 3–4 pairs trekking socks (merino)

Footwear

  • Broken-in waterproof hiking boots (B1/B2 rated)
  • Camp shoes (trainers or sandals)

Gear

  • 35–45 litre daypack
  • Headtorch with spare batteries (essential for summit night)
  • 2–3 litre water bladder or bottles
  • Sunglasses (UV, category 3)
  • Trekking poles (one or two)
  • Sleeping bag rated to -10°C (we provide mats)

Personal

  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ and lip balm
  • Basic first-aid: blister plasters, painkillers, rehydration salts
  • Toiletries, towel, wet wipes
  • Headache tablets (ibuprofen)

What we provide

Tents, sleeping mats, mess gear, all food and cooking, and bottled drinking water on the mountain. You can rent a sleeping bag, jacket and boots from us — just ask when booking.
